The Emperor Gyokuro is a Top Shelf Japanese green tea. The flavor is exquisite and complex.

This Japanese green tea is shade grown and hand picked. A shade covering of bamboo or other material is applied to the tea bushes twenty to thirty days before plucking. This prevents an abundance of light hitting the plants and allows the chlorophyll to increase. The shade prevents L-theanine, an amino acid, from converting to catechins. Catechins are typically more bitter. The higher amount of L-theanine rather than catechins are what bring a sweetness and depth of flavor to Gyokuro tea.

Not only does L-theanine bring smoothness and roundness of flavor to this tea, it also helps relax the body and mind. The taste is robust and vegetal, the aroma grassy.
